Test your hair strength to effectively determine the proper conditioning treatment. Porosity and Elasticity are two strand test, that you can perform to better discover the constitution of your hair.

Porosity Test
Porosity is the ability of the hair to absorb and retain moisture.

  1. Take 1 single strand of hair from your head, holding taut at end of strand
  2. Place hair between thumb and fore finger
  3. Slide fingers slowly up and down strand several times

Result #1
Good Porosity – if the strand feels smooth in both directions it means the cuticle layer of the hair is closed and intact. Hair with good porosity has body, sheen and holds a style well.

To Maintain: alternate between, moisturizer, acidifier, and reconstructor treatments weekly. Process under warm heat for 10 to 15 minutes.

Result #2
Poor Porosity – the strand feels very rough in one direction, and bumpy in the other, as you slide your fingers up and down the hair, signifying a damaged cuticle layer. The result is dull, lifeless hair, poor porosity is generally the result of over-processing, excessive heat, perms, coloring, bleaching or relaxers.

To Rectify: mix equal parts of acidifier and cream moisturizer, with 10 drops of hns oyl™ (efa), blend well, saturate  hair, process under warm dryer for 30 minutes. Continue treatment twice weekly, until the cuticle layer has closed, and you get porosity test result #1.

Elasticity Test
Elasticity is the ability of the hair to stretch and return to it’s original form without breaking.

  1. Separate and cut 1 strand of hair from head
  2. Hold each end between forefinger and thumb
  3. Gently pull strand in both directions until hair stretches
  4. Release the strand to determine if it: returns to its original state, or snaps.

Result #1
Good Elasticity – If the strand returns to it’s original form, the hair has good elasticity.

To Maintain: alternate bi-weekly between an acidifying and moisturizing conditioner for 15 to 20 minutes, without heat. Use a reconstructor every two months.

Result #2
Poor Elasticity – If the strand breaks, the hair is dry and brittle, and lacks the proper moisture level.

To Rectify: mix equal parts of reconstructor and cream moisturizer, with 10 drops of hns oyl™ (efa), blend well, saturate  hair, process under warm dryer for 30 minutes. Continue treatment twice weekly, until breakage stops.
